Among the many spiritual observances in the Tamil month of Aadi, Aadi Thapasu holds a unique place in the hearts of devotees. It is a festival that symbolizes the divine unity of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, and it is deeply associated with Gomathi Amman’s intense penance.
Why is Shankara Narayanar Darshan Observed During Aadi Thapasu?
Aadi Thapasu is primarily observed at Sankaran Kovil, a sacred temple town in Tamil Nadu. According to legend, it is here that Gomathi Amman, a form of Goddess Parvati, performed intense penance (Thapasu) to reveal the oneness of Shiva and Vishnu to the world. x`
On Aadi Pournami, when the Moon transits Uthirada Nakshatra in Capricorn (Makara Rasi) and the Sun is in Cancer (Kataka Rasi), Lord Shiva granted a divine vision—appearing in a combined form with Lord Vishnu. This form is known as Shankara Narayanar, representing the harmony between Hari (Vishnu) and Haran (Shiva).
Just as Lord Shiva once appeared as Ardhanareeswara to convey the unity of Shiva and Parvati. In Sankaran Kovil, he appeared as Shankara Narayanar to demonstrate that Shiva and Vishnu are not separate—they are different aspects of the same supreme consciousness.
The Legend Behind Aadi Thapasu
Long ago, in the land that is now Sankaran Kovil, two serpents named Sangan and Paduman lived in an anthill.
- Sangan was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva.
- Paduman was a sincere devotee of Lord Vishnu.
They often engaged in debates over which deity was greater. To resolve their spiritual dispute, they journeyed to Mount Kailash and sought guidance from Goddess Parvati.
Parvati Devi, caught between choosing her husband or her brother, wisely explained:
“There is no difference between Shiva and Vishnu. They are one and the same.”
But the serpents wanted proof. So Parvati assured them that the divine unity would be revealed through a combined form.
Gomathi Amman's Intense Penance
To fulfill the promise she made, Parvati took the form of Gomathi and began a severe penance at Sankaran Kovil. She stood on a needle’s tip with one leg, showcasing unmatched devotion and surrender.
Moved by her intense thapas, Lord Shiva finally agreed and appeared in a dazzling form—half Shiva, half Vishnu—as Shankara Narayanar.
This miraculous event occurred on the Aadi Pournami day, and it is commemorated every year as Aadi Thapasu.
