India is known for its rich tapestry of festivals and diverse culture. Janmashtami, or Krishna Jayanti, is one of the most vibrant and joyous Hindu festivals celebrated across the country. This enchanting festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the beloved eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  Lord Krishna is celebrated for his mischievous and playful nature, his deep love and compassion for all beings, and his divine teachings. His captivating stories, from childhood antics to his role in the Bhagavad Gita, offer guidance on how to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Why Do We Celebrate Krishna Janmashtami?

In Hindu culture, Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, typically falling in August-September during the Rohini Nakshatra. The name Janmashtami combines "Janma," which signifies birth, and "Ashtami," the day of his birth.

This auspicious day marks the birth of Lord Krishna, who was born at midnight in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva amidst extraordinary circumstances. According to Hindu scriptures, Krishna's birth ended the oppressive rule of his uncle, King Kamsa, and initiated a new era characterized by righteousness and dharma.

The life of Lord Krishna is filled with enchanting and timeless stories that captivate the hearts and minds of devotees. From his mischievous childhood antics to his divine love for Radha and the gopis, Krishna's life is a tapestry of profound experiences. His heroic deeds and remarkable teachings to Arjuna during the Kurukshetra war, as documented in the sacred text of the Bhagavad Gita, continue to resonate deeply with people around the world.
