48-day Kanda Sashti Viratham for Lord Murugan: 2025 Start date, Fasting practices and Spiritual benefits.

Lord Murugan Shasti

48-day Kanda Sashti Viratham for Lord Murugan: 2025 Start date, Fasting practices and Spiritual benefits.

When it comes to observing long periods of spiritual discipline, devotees often think of the Viratham for Lord Ayyappan. Yet, there is another sacred and equally profound tradition — the 48-day Kanda Sashti Viratham dedicated to Lord Murugan. For Murugan bhaktas, this period is eagerly awaited as a time to deepen their devotion, surrender to the Lord, and practice self-discipline. Many undertake this sacred observance with the hope of receiving Murugan’s divine blessings, fulfilling cherished prayers, and attaining spiritual growth.

Significance of Maha Skanda Sashti

Every month, devotees observe Shashti Tithi (the sixth lunar day) as an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Murugan. While monthly Sashti fasting brings blessings, the Maha Skanda Sashti festival in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October–November) holds supreme significance.

It commemorates the divine event of Soorasamharam, when Lord Murugan destroyed the demon Surapadman and protected the Devas, restoring peace in the universe. For Murugan bhaktas, this period is the ultimate opportunity to surrender to the Lord, chant his praises, and live in purity.

When to Begin the 48-Day Viratham

Devotees who wish to observe the 48-day Kanda Sashti Viratham must begin their austerity on September 10th, Wednesday, 2025.

In 2025, Maha Skanda Sashti Viratham begins on October 22nd, and the grand Soorasamharam will be observed on October 27th.

How to Begin the Viratham

  • Starting the viratham is considered a sacred vow. Devotees may begin it in a simple yet devotional manner:
  • Take a head bath on the first day.
  • Light a lamp in the prayer room, invoke Lord Murugan, and mentally take the vow for 48 days.
  • Some devotees wear the sacred mala (rudraksha or tulsi beads) to signify their discipline, while others observe it without the mala.

Practices to Follow During the 48 Days

The essence of the viratham lies in living a life of purity, devotion, and self-discipline. Some key practices include:

Daily Prayer & Chanting

Devotees may listen to or recite Thiruppugazh, Kanda Sashti Kavasam, or Vel Maaral. Regular chanting of the Murugan Gayatri Mantra and "Om Saravanabhava" enhances focus and devotion.

Bathing Rituals

A daily head bath is not mandatory. Traditionally, devotees bathe on Tuesdays and Fridays, which are considered highly auspicious for Murugan worship.

House & Prayer Room Cleanliness

  • Clean the house the day after beginning the viratham.
  • Keep the prayer space tidy and purify it once a week.

Food Discipline

  • Strict vegetarian food is a must throughout the 48 days.
  • Cooking non-vegetarian food for family members is allowed, but those observing the viratham must not consume it.
  • Women devotees may continue the viratham even during their menstrual cycle by delegating lamp lighting and prayers to other family members.

Fasting Practices

  • Many devotees observe fasting by consuming only the naivedyam (food offered to Murugan) once a day.
  • On the first and last day of the viratham, eating just one meal is considered especially auspicious.
  • After completing the viratham, devotees are advised not to consume non-vegetarian food immediately the very next day.

The Spiritual Benefits of the Viratham

The 48-day Kanda Sashti Viratham form a sacred mandala period that guides devotees into a life of discipline and devotion when observed with sincerity. It is not just about avoiding certain foods or habits; rather, it is a profound spiritual journey of purification — cleansing the body, calming the mind, and uplifting the soul. Through prayer, chanting, and a life of simplicity, devotees open themselves to receive the abundant grace and blessings of Lord Murugan

  • It helps cultivate self-control and purity of thought.
  • It brings peace of mind and strengthens devotion.
  • It is believed to remove obstacles, fulfil heartfelt wishes, and shower divine protection.

By observing this discipline with sincerity, chanting his divine names, and offering prayers during Skanda Sashti, devotees align themselves with Murugan’s energy of valour, wisdom, and protection.

This year, as Soorasamharam falls on October 27, 2025, may every devotee who undertakes the viratham from September 10 experience the boundless blessings of Lord Murugan and witness his divine grace in their lives.
