Srivilliputhur Andal Temple and Aadi Pooram Festival Celebration

Aadi Goddess Andal Lord Vishnu

Srivilliputhur Andal Temple and Aadi Pooram Festival CelebrationThe Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, located in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, is one of the most sacred and culturally rich temples in South India. Dedicated to Goddess Andal and Lord Vishnu (in the form of Vatapatrasayi), this ancient temple is not just a spiritual destination but also a symbol of Tamil heritage, devotion, and poetry. The temple is revered as the birthplace of Andal, the only female Alvar saint among the twelve Alvars of the Vaishnava tradition.

Historical Background

Srivilliputhur Andal Temple and Aadi Pooram Festival CelebrationSrivilliputhur is believed to be over 2000 years old. The temple's history is deeply intertwined with the legend of Andal, who is regarded as an incarnation of Goddess Bhudevi (Earth goddess) and the foster daughter of the great Tamil saint and poet Periyalvar.

According to scriptures, Periyalvar, while performing his daily duties at the temple, discovered a baby girl under a tulsi (holy basil) plant in the temple garden. He named her Kodhai, who later became Andal, meaning “She Who Rules”. From a young age, Andal exhibited deep devotion to Lord Vishnu, composing passionate hymns like Tiruppavai and Nachiyar Thirumozhi, which are still sung with great reverence during the Margazhi month (December-January).

Architectural Marvel

The temple is a magnificent example of Dravidian architecture, with towering rajagopurams (gateway towers), intricately carved pillars, and richly adorned sanctums. The main tower, standing at around 192 feet, is one of the tallest temple towers in Tamil Nadu and is featured in the official emblem of the Tamil Nadu government, symbolizing the temple’s cultural importance.

The temple complex is divided into two main shrines:

  • Andal Shrine – Where Andal is worshipped in her divine form, often shown with her parrot and wearing the sacred garland.
  • Vatapatrasayi Shrine – Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture on the banyan leaf (Vatapatram), a rare and unique representation.

There are also beautiful mandapams (halls) and gardens, including the nandavanam (flower garden) where Andal was found as a child. The temple tank, called the Kattazhagiya Singar Pushkarini, adds to the serenity of the sacred space.

Religious and Cultural Significance

Srivilliputhur Andal Temple is a Divya Desam, one of the 108 temples of Vishnu praised by the Alvars. The temple is especially significant for Vaishnavites and those who follow the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Andal’s life and works have a special place in Tamil devotional literature and Vaishnava theology.

Her hymns in Tiruppavai emphasize devotion, surrender (prapatti), and the spiritual longing for divine union, which have universal appeal and are celebrated beyond regional and religious boundaries.
