Vaikasi Visakam 2026: The Sacred Birthday of Lord Murugan — Date, Significance, Rituals, Puja Vidhi, Temples & the Stories Behind the Festival

Lord Murugan Vaikasi Visakam

Vaikasi Visakam is one of the most auspicious and widely celebrated festivals in Tamil Nadu and among Tamil communities across the world. Observed on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June), this festival marks the divine birthday of Lord Murugan — the beloved son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, worshipped across South India as the God of War, Wisdom, and Grace.

Vaikasi Visakam Murugan Birthday

In 2026, Vaikasi Visakam falls on May 30, 2026 (Saturday). Temples across Tamil Nadu — from the towering gopurams of Thiruchendur Murugan Temple to the hillside sanctum of Palani Murugan Temple, and from Thiruthani Murugan Temple to Vadapalani Murugan Temple in Chennai — will be illuminated with devotion, rituals, and the fragrance of jasmine and incense.

What Is Vaikasi Visakam? Meaning and Origin

The name Vaikasi Visakam combines two Tamil words:

  • Vaikasi — the Tamil month (mid-May to mid-June)
  • Visakam — the Visakha nakshatra (star), the birth star of Lord Murugan

When the full moon of Vaikasi aligns with the Visakha star, the day becomes supremely sacred — it is believed to be the exact moment Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya, Subramanya Swamy, Skanda, and Arumugam, was born into this world to vanquish evil and restore righteousness.

In Sanskrit traditions of North India, the same deity is revered as Lord Kartikeya — the commander of the divine army of the Gods, born from the six sparks of Lord Shiva's fire, raised by the six Kritika stars, and cherished by his mother Goddess Parvati.

The Sacred Stories Behind Vaikasi Visakam

These are not mere myths. For millions of devotees, these stories are living truths that explain why Lord Murugan is worshipped with such passion.

Story 1: The Birth of Lord Murugan — Fire, Stars, and a Mother's Love

The demon king Soorapadman obtained a boon that he could only be killed by a son of Shiva. To break Shiva's deep meditation, the gods sent Manmatha. Shiva opened his third eye, and Manmatha was reduced to ash. From that eye poured six divine sparks of fire. The Ganges laid them in Saravana Poigai, where they became six infant boys. The six Kritika stars nursed them. When Goddess Parvati gathered them in a loving embrace, the six became one. This was Shanmukha, born on Vaikasi Visakam.

Story 2: The War Against Soorapadman — The Vel Descends

Goddess Parvati gave Murugan the divine Vel. As Commander-in-Chief, Murugan clashed with Soorapadman. When the demon transformed into a massive mango tree, Murugan hurled the Vel, splitting him in two. One half became his peacock (vehicle) and the other his rooster (banner). This victory of grace is commemorated at Thiruchendur.

Story 3: Murugan and Valli — The Story of Love and Surrender

Valli was a tribal girl guarding millet fields. Murugan came disguised as an old man to woo her. With the help of Ganesha, who appeared as a charging elephant, Valli ran into the old man's arms for protection. Upon revealing his radiant divine form, she surrendered. This story reminds us that Murugan's love is relentless and patient.

Story 4: Murugan Teaches His Father — The Guru Who Is the Son

Young Murugan asked Brahma the meaning of "Om." When Brahma couldn't answer, Murugan imprisoned him. Shiva investigated and found his son standing as a Guru. Murugan whispered the meaning of the Pranava Mantra into Shiva's ear, earning the name "Swaminatha" — the lord who became the guru of his own father.
