The demon king Soorapadman obtained a boon that he could only be killed by a son of Shiva. To break Shiva's deep meditation, the gods sent Manmatha. Shiva opened his third eye, and Manmatha was reduced to ash. From that eye poured six divine sparks of fire. The Ganges laid them in Saravana Poigai, where they became six infant boys.
